Same-day courier to Brighton

Rapid Despatch delivers to Brighton by dedicated vehicle, around 65 miles from our nearest branch. There is no Brighton depot. We are an independent courier company trading since 2001, with four branches in Hampshire and Berkshire, covering Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey, and around 50 drivers.

The one run on our list that goes along the south coast rather than up the country. Sixty-five miles, one vehicle, and an honest word about what the A27 does to a timetable.

Brighton Palace Pier

Rapid Despatch runs same-day courier jobs to Brighton by dedicated vehicle, 65 miles east along the M27 and the A27.

A single vehicle runs the whole distance, so nothing is transferred, nothing is sorted and nobody but the driver handles it. The distance is short but the A27 is not a motorway for most of it, so the drive is around an hour and a half rather than the hour the mileage suggests. The controller confirms a realistic arrival when you book.

Where the vehicle comes from

A Brighton job is usually allocated at our Southampton branch, and the controller confirms it on the day. Which vehicle actually runs depends on where the nearest available driver is when you ring.

Sixty-five miles is short by our standards, but the A27 does not behave like sixty-five miles of motorway. Give us the collection postcode and the genuine latest acceptable arrival, and the controller will tell you what is realistic rather than what the mileage implies.

The A27, and why it is slower than it looks

The run is the M27 east out of Southampton, then the A27 along the coast through Chichester, Arundel and Worthing into Brighton. Sixty-five miles, and around an hour and a half on a good day.

The A27 is the whole story. It is dual carriageway in stretches and single carriageway in others, it passes through and around several towns, and the sections at Arundel and Worthing are known for queuing. A closure has very few useful alternatives, because the coast is on one side and the Downs are on the other.

None of that excuses a vague answer. If your delivery is tied to a conference, a print slot, a clinic or a customer waiting, give the controller the genuine latest acceptable arrival and the departure gets planned backwards from it.

What carries it, and how the price is built

Brighton work is mostly small vans and Transit sizes: documents, equipment, samples, creative and production material. Luton and tail-lift are available, though the city centre limits how large a vehicle can usefully get to many addresses.

Waiting is worth flagging here, because central Brighton parking is genuinely difficult and a driver circling is a cost.

Vehicles

What the cover is

On a dedicated vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes anywhere in the UK, account holders are covered to a maximum of £25,000. On other services, liability is limited to the value of the goods, the cost of repairing them, or £1,000 per tonne on gross weight, whichever is lowest.

Higher cover can usually be arranged before collection at an additional charge, so declare the value when you book.

Delivering into Brighton

The Lanes, the hills and the parking problem

Brighton city centre is harder to deliver into than its size suggests. The Lanes and the North Laine are narrow and largely pedestrianised, the city is built on a slope so streets that look parallel on a map are not equivalent for a loaded van, and controlled parking covers almost everything near the centre (parking and loading, Brighton & Hove City Council).

The practical consequence is that a driver frequently cannot park outside. So the useful line at booking is where the van is meant to stop, whether there is a loading bay or a service road, any time window, and a mobile for somebody who can come out. That single line is worth more than a detailed postcode here.

Vehicle size follows from the same information. A Luton is fine for Hollingbury or the Shoreham corridor and close to useless in the North Laine, so if the address is central we would rather send something smaller than send the largest vehicle the load would fit in.

Where the work actually comes from

Brighton's commercial base is unusual for its size. A substantial digital, creative and media sector, much of it in small offices around the centre and in New England House and the Lanes. Two universities with campuses at Falmer and across the city. The Royal Sussex County Hospital. And a genuine conference economy at the Brighton Centre and the seafront hotels.

Outside the centre it gets easier: Hollingbury, Moulsecoomb and the Shoreham corridor carry the industrial and trade units, and Shoreham Port sits just west.

The mix matters because it decides what a delivery looks like. A digital business in a converted building near the station receives at a shared reception with no loading bay. A unit at Hollingbury has a yard and a forklift. Same city, same page, two completely different jobs, and the booking needs to say which one it is.

Conferences, and the weeks the city changes

Exhibition and event work runs on organiser timetables, vehicle passes and loading slots, so "deliver to the Brighton Centre" gets a driver as far as a barrier. Send the event, the hall or stand, the contact, the build window and any vehicle restriction with the booking.

Build and breakdown days are the ones to book earliest. Access is tightly scheduled, the slots are allocated in advance by the organiser rather than by us, and a vehicle without one waits regardless of what it is carrying or who it is for.

Covered on the same run

Two groups, and the difference matters for the quote. The coast route runs west from Brighton and a vehicle already going there reaches all of it without a real detour. The second group sits twenty to thirty miles north on the A23 and M23, so those are quoted individually rather than as part of the same run.

Brighton courier questions

It depends on the distance, the vehicle, the timing and the access at both ends. See how a short coastal run is costed

No. Rapid Despatch has four branches, in Hampshire and Berkshire: Basingstoke, Farnborough, Reading and Southampton.

An hour and a half on a good day, which is slower than sixty-five miles ought to be, because the A27 stops being motorway well before Brighton and picks up every roundabout and town in between. That figure is the drive alone.

Where the van is meant to stop, on top of the address.

Yes, with the event details.

Yes. The coast route runs both ways, and a Brighton collection for delivery in Southampton, Portsmouth, Hampshire or beyond is the same job in reverse.

We move parcels, but not as a parcel network.

Book a courier to Brighton

For something urgent, call 0345 8333 833 and give the controller both postcodes and the deadline. For planned work, use the quote form and include where the van can stop at the Brighton end, which is the detail that decides whether the job runs cleanly.
