One hundred and fifteen miles, and what it buys you

A Cardiff job is usually allocated at our Basingstoke branch, and the controller confirms it on the day. Which vehicle actually runs depends on where the nearest available driver is when you ring.

For most goods an overnight service is the right answer.

The M4 the whole way, and the tunnels at Newport

Out of Basingstoke on the A34, west on the M4, over the Prince of Wales Bridge and on into Cardiff. It is one road almost the entire distance, which makes the timing unusually predictable.

The exception is the Brynglas Tunnels at Newport (Traffic Wales), where the M4 narrows to two lanes underground about a quarter of an hour short of Cardiff. It is the known constraint on this corridor and it does not have an alternative worth taking in a van. When it is blocked, everything behind it stops.

We plan around it rather than pretend it is not there. If your delivery is time-critical and lands in the afternoon peak, the controller will say so at quotation and suggest an earlier collection instead of promising a time the road cannot deliver.

What carries it, and how the price is built

Cardiff work is usually a small van or a Transit, because at this distance the consignment needs to be worth a dedicated vehicle. A Luton or a tail-lift comes out when the load genuinely calls for one.

What the cover is

On a dedicated vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes anywhere in the UK, account holders are covered to a maximum of £25,000. On other services, liability is limited to the value of the goods, the cost of repairing them, or £1,000 per tonne on gross weight, whichever is lowest.

Higher cover can usually be arranged before collection at an additional charge. If the consignment is worth more than the standard limit, say so when you book, not when something has gone wrong.

Delivering into Cardiff

Match days, and the one thing that closes the city

The Principality Stadium sits in the middle of Cardiff rather than on the edge of it, and on major event days the roads around it close, including Castle Street and the approaches through the centre. For a delivery into the city centre that is not a delay of a few minutes, it is a different route and sometimes a different time of day.

If your delivery falls on an international, a concert or a cup final, say so at booking. We will either bring the collection forward or plan the approach from the other side, and we would rather tell you at quotation than explain it afterwards. It is the single most useful piece of Cardiff knowledge on this page.

Cardiff Gate, the Bay, and the estates that take vehicles easily

Cardiff's commercial geography splits cleanly, and knowing which part you are in decides the job. Cardiff Gate Business Park sits at Junction 30 of the M4 on the eastern edge and is one of the easiest business addresses in Wales to reach, straight off the motorway with no city driving at all. Coryton at Junction 32 does the same job on the northern side.

Cardiff Bay, Atlantic Wharf and Capital Quarter are offices and mixed-use, so expect reception booking and a loading point rather than a bay. Central Square by the station is the same. The Newport Road corridor east of the centre and Leckwith to the south-west hold the older trade and industrial units, generally with a yard and a gate.

Wentloog, out towards the east on the Severn estuary, carries the rail freight terminal and the distribution units, and it behaves like a logistics park rather than a city address: booking references and gate procedures.

Newport, Bridgend, Swansea and the whole corridor on one vehicle

South Wales strings out along the M4, and that changes what a dedicated vehicle is worth here. Newport, Bridgend, Port Talbot, Swansea and Caerphilly all sit on or just off the same road, so a vehicle already running to Cardiff can take in several of them without a meaningful detour.

The Brynglas Tunnels, and why we ask about your deadline

Cardiff Airport is at Rhoose, twelve miles west of the city on the A4050 and A4226, and is a separate journey from the city centre rather than part of it. Anything going there needs the operator or tenant name and the landside address.

Covered on the same run

South Wales strings out along the M4, so these places are genuinely served on the same Cardiff route, not quoted as separate jobs. The M4 corridor is quoted on this basis; the valleys, west Wales and anything off the trunk road are quoted individually, because the roads there decide the timing rather than the distance.

Cardiff courier questions

No.

Yes, and it is much cheaper than booking separately. Newport, Cardiff, Bridgend, Port Talbot and Swansea sit along the same eighty-mile stretch of the M4, so a vehicle already running to Cardiff adds a drop for the extra mileage rather than for a new job. Give us all the postcodes at quotation and we will price the run rather than the drops. To see how a quote is built, See what a corridor job is priced on.

Yes, if the address is in or near the city centre.

Yes.

It depends on the distance, the vehicle, the timing and the access at both ends. To see how a quote is built, See what a corridor job is priced on.
